Hyundai is hard at work revamping its entire SUV lineup, having recently introduced the new subcompact Kona and a complete redesign of the mid-size Santa Fe. The compact Tucson isn’t left out, as an update for 2019 brings freshened looks, a revised powertrain lineup, and several new standard and optional tech features.
The Tucson goes from offering three available inline-four engines to just two, with the 2019 model dropping the turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder and dual-clutch automatic transmission previously offered on upper trim levels. The naturally aspirated 2.4-liter four-banger with 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque that was added to the Tucson lineup for 2018 is now the standard engine on SEL, Sport, and Limited trim levels, while the base 2.0-liter four-cylinder in Value and SE models carries on unchanged with 164 horsepower and 151 lb-ft of torque. Both engines pair with a six-speed automatic transmission and either front- or all-wheel drive, the latter being optional on all trim levels.
The exterior updates modernize the Tucson’s styling with revised headlights and taillights, a restyled grille, tweaked fascias front and rear, and new wheel designs in sizes ranging from 17 to 19 inches. Interior revisions are a bit more significant: the entire center stack has been redone to incorporate a new tablet-style 7.0-inch touchscreen display. This screen, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, is now standard on all trim levels (the base SE previously came with a 5.0-inch screen).
Also now included on all Tucsons are active safety features including forward-collision warning, automated emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. This is a nice upgrade considering that previously these features were only available on the fully loaded Tucson Limited with the Ultimate package, stickering for nearly $33,000.
We should learn more detailed info about the updated Tucson as we get closer to its fall on-sale date, but we don’t expect pricing to change much from the 2018 model, which starts at $23,530.
